Awake Plastic Surgery Procedures

Though general anesthesia has proved an essential part of modern medicine, it is not always the solution. For intensive surgery, completely “going under” can allow you maximum comfort while allowing the surgeon to work efficiently. However, it is not always necessary. There are a variety of surgeries that work as awake plastic surgery procedures. In these cases, you may only require local anesthesia or light sedation.
At Gabbay Plastic Surgery, our goal is to combine excellence and comfort for every patient. While many of our procedures can be done with general anesthesia, almost all procedures can be done with an alternative means of comfort.

Why Choose Awake Procedures?

General anesthesia leaves you completely unconscious. For intensive surgeries, this is ideal. For several reasons:
  • It allows the surgeon to work more easily
  • You feel absolutely no pain
However, this means of sedation is not always ideal. General anesthesia carries with it the most risk. Not only does is prove more likely to cause side effects, but it can interact with certain medical conditions. That is why we always conduct a full medical history before using it with a patient.
Avoid General Anesthesia if You Have:
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Kidney Problems
  • Sleep Apnea
  • And more.
Your physician will always discuss the conditions of general anesthesia beforehand to keep you safe.
I like not only to be loved, but also to be told I am loved.

BENEFITS OF AWAKE PROCEDURES

Awake procedures tend to be much safer while still providing a high level of comfort. Instead of complete sedation, you may receive local anesthetic, IV sedation, or a combination of both. These awake options come with several significant benefits.
Recovery
Since less stress is put on the body, you can recover more quickly from your procedure. You can decrease total recovery time by days if you choose an awake procedure.
Safety
Awake procedures carry far less risk than those with general anesthesia. Since there are fewer drugs involved, there is far less chance for side effects. There is much less stress on your heart and lungs, especially.
Affordability
General anesthesia requires a more complex and cost-heavy process. Awake procedures reduce this complexity. In practical terms, this results in lower costs without sacrificing quality.

PATIENT INPUT IS CENTRAL

Often, patients have the choice of how to go about the procedure. If the thought of being conscious during surgery is stressful, be sure to communicate this to Dr. Gabbay. Receiving plastic surgery should be an exciting and transformative moment. That is why we always work to ensure patients are fully comfortable before proceeding.
When you choose an awake procedure, we take every precaution to ensure a fully comfortable experience. Using our experience and skill, we deliver cosmetic surgery that is transformative and exciting.

TUMESCENT SOLUTION

Using this unique solution, plastic surgery can be performed comfortably while the patient is still awake. The tumescent wetting solution has three main parts:
  • Local anesthetic
  • Saltwater
  • Adrenaline
Each part of the solution plays a role in making the procedure comfortable and efficient. The anesthetic eliminates pain and sensitivity. The saltwater ensures a sterile and clean process. And the adrenaline constricts blood vessels, resulting in minimal bleeding during your procedure. When carefully prepared, a tumescent solution allows patients to experience a comfortable awake procedure.

WHAT SURGERIES CAN BE AWAKE PROCEDURES?

Almost all plastic or cosmetic procedures are compatible as awake procedures. In most cases, you get to decide as the patient which way to go about your treatment. Below are some of the most popular procedures that can be comfortably done as awake procedures.

AWAKE LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction targets specific pockets of fat and removes them. Often, exercise and diet can still leave you with stubborn fat no matter what. Liposuction is an excellent way to rid yourself of those final pockets and enjoy the results of your effort. Though it is a full surgery, many patients undergo it with local anesthesia or light IV sedation. You are awake but fully relaxed throughout the process. The procedure can work for almost any part of your body. When done with local anesthesia, it is called tumescent liposuction.

AWAKE BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast augmentation can readily be done as an awake procedure. You will be entirely comfortable and not experience any pain. Breast augmentation is an excellent way to build an aesthetic figure you can feel confident in.

AWAKE TUMMY TUCK

One of the most popular plastic surgeries, a tummy tuck smooths and tones your midsection. Not only does it remove fat, but it tightens the muscles in your abdominal area. The result is a sleeker figure that instills self-confidence.

OTHER AWAKE PROCEDURES

We also offer tumescent:
  • Fat transfer (to buttocks, breast,s hands, face)
  • Scar revision
  • Mini tummy tuck
  • Arm lift
  • Thigh lift
  • Breast lift
  • Breast augmentation with implants
We offer a range of procedures at Gabbay Plastic Surgery for the body, breasts, and face. Nearly all of these can be done as awake procedures, so do not hesitate to ask about any of them. During your consultation, you can learn more about what options are available and which may be best for you.
