What Are a Neck Lift ?

A neck lift is a popular cosmetic procedure to target concerns around the neck. Specifically, it can help with:
  • Loose Skin: Loose skin is a common result of the aging process and builds up over time.
  • Muscle Sagging: Sagging muscle is a result of how the aging process. It impacts the muscle that extends across the neck on either side. Aging can cause this muscle to sag downward over time, leading to two visible bands that extend from just below the chin toward the collarbone.
  • Excess Fat: Excess fat in the neck region can cause loss of definition in your jawline or lead to a double chin.
Neck liposuction specifically targets that excess fat.

The Neck Lift Procedure

There are many different types of techniques for neck lift surgery. You can be sure that Dr. Gabbay will always use the best method for your situation and needs. Though each procedure will vary, they typically take approximately 60-90 minutes from start to finish.
Two of the most common techniques used during a neck lift include:

Corset Platysmaplasty

Effective for patients suffering from neck banding or patients whose neck skin hangs off slack neck muscles.

Hammock/Purse String Platysmaplasty

More suitable for a male patient because of the deeper structures of a man’s neck. The hammock platysmaplasty captures loose muscle and keeps the neck musculature tight. When platysma banding is present, the neck muscles will be tightened through a hidden incision made below the chin. And the edges of the two sides of the muscle will be quilted together to create a new neckline.
Other techniques include:

Cervicoplasty

Cervicoplasty is used to remove excess, drooping, or sagging skin from the neck region. It then focuses on repositioning the neck tissue to create more youthful and firm neck contours

Neck Liposuction

Fat removal often has the most dramatic effect on neck re-contouring. It can be used for volume reduction and tissue tightening. Neck liposuction can be performed under general or local anesthesia. It involves only a small incision underneath the chin. We then use a vacuum device attached to a cannula (thin surgical instrument) to suction away excess fat. Micro-liposuction utilizes smaller liposuction instruments to perform more detailed contouring in some regions of the neck.

Laser-Assisted Neck Liposuction

Laser-assisted neck liposuction involves the removal of neck fat for a more defined silhouette of the neck or jawline. During this procedure, the patient is first injected with a tumescent solution (a mixture of local anesthesia and epinephrine to minimize pain and reduce bleeding). The solution causes the fat to swell and firm up, allowing it to be more easily removed. A laser is then used to treat the inside or back surface of the neck skin and musculature. And the thermal heat from the laser permanently destroys the fat cells.

Cervical Lipectomy

Cervical Lipectomy involves a small incision made beneath the neck. Suited for patients with excess fatty tissue in the central region of the neck. The cervical lipectomy technique is often performed in combination with neck liposuction or platysmaplasty.

Submentoplasty

Appropriate for patients who present with a limited amount of skin laxity in the neck. A key benefit of this procedure is how it combines several aspects. Submentoplasty uses liposuction, cervical lipectomy, and platysmaplasty through a well-concealed T-shaped incision beneath the chin.
