What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, aims to make subtle improvements to the nose’s shape. When done right, it enhances your natural features and builds upon them.
When performed by an expert, rhinoplasty can change:
  • Nose size
  • Width (at the bridge)
  • Profile (with visible bumps or depressions on the bridge)
  • Nasal tip (if large or bulbous, drooping, or too upturned)
  • Nostrils (if large, wide, or upturned)
  • Nasal asymmetry and deviation
  • Breathing problems caused by nasal issues (i.e., a deviated septum)
This procedure is gaining popularity among all age groups. With new advanced methods, we can deliver natural results with shortened recovery periods. So it is more convenient than ever to get this procedure.

Rhinoplasty Options

One of the benefits of rhinoplasty is all the incisions are within the nose. That means you shouldn’t have any visible scarring! At Gabbay Plastic Surgery, we use a couple different techniques. And we always choose the one that will best suit your needs. Our two main procedures are:
  • Open Procedure: Best for more extensive reshaping
  • Closed Procedure: Best for minor nose reshaping
We can also use cartilage from other parts of your body to augment your nasal structures. Dr. Gabbay will cover all your treatment options during your consultation with him. And you can always be sure you will receive a fully-tailored experience to match your goals and needs.
Both procedures are out-patient. So that means you can return home the same day.
The world's big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark.

Is Rhinoplasty Right for Me?

A rhinoplasty procedure aims to bring symmetry and balance to your features. If you want to enhance and balance your nose’s appearance, this procedure could be right for you.
Cosmetic issues for men and women that rhinoplasty can improve include:
  • Large Nose
  • Hump on the Nasal Bridge
  • Widened Nasal Bridge
  • Drooping Nasal Tip
  • Elongated Nose
  • Upturned Nose
  • Bulbous (round) Nasal Tip
  • Hooked Nose
  • Crooked Nose
  • Flared Nostrils
Medical and reconstructive issues rhinoplasty can be used to treat and correct include:
  • Congenital deformities
  • Scarring
  • Breathing problems: nose reshaping can open or widen narrow nasal passages to alleviate breathing difficulty
  • Injury or trauma to the nose

Septoplasty for a Deviated Septum

If you suffer from breathing problems through your nose, you might benefit from a septoplasty. This procedure aims to reshape the septum, allowing smoother breathing. The septum is the interior part of your nose that divides it. Whether through injury or genetics, it can become crooked. When this happens, it can obstruct your breathing.
But with a septoplasty, you can correct this deviation. Symptoms indicating that you may need a septoplasty include:
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Headaches
  • Breathing difficulties
Many patients combine septoplasty with a nose job at the same time. When you do, you can both create cosmetic and physical enhancements.

Common Rhinoplasty Corrections

Large Dorsal Hump

Enlargement of the nasal bone, septum, or nasal cartilage can cause a large dorsal hump. With subtle bone and cartilage reduction, we can deliver a smooth aesthetic and profile.

Under-Projected Dorsum:

You can correct an indentation of the dorsum or tip with several methods, including:
  • Dermal filler injections (i.e., Juvederm)
  • Silicone implants
  • Grafting using cartilage from a donor site

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty helps patients who are dissatisfied with a previous surgery. Or it can help patients who suffered an injury after their first surgery.

About the Rhinoplasty Procedure

In most cases, Dr. Gabbay performs rhinoplasty under general anesthesia. This can ensure optimal comfort and better results. Usually, the surgery typically lasts between 1-3 hours.
Dr. Gabbay then uses one of two methods based on your goals.
  • Closed technique: involves small incisions on the inside of the nose.
  • Open technique: making a small incision on the skin separating the nostrils.
After making the initial incision, Dr. Gabbay reshapes the bone and cartilage to correct your specific nasal concerns. This may involve:
  • Separating the soft tissues from the bone structure
  • Reshaping the cartilage to produce the new nasal structure
  • Utilizing implants or grafts to enhance the size of the nose
  • Altering the size of the septum to change the length of the nose.
Dr. Gabbay will cover every aspect of your unique procedure with you. So you will never be left in the dark and can be fully prepared. Always feel free to ask any questions or bring up any concerns. We will gladly answer them!
Once the nasal reshaping is complete, Dr. Gabbay closes the incision with small dissolvable stitches. He may insert some soft nasal packing. An external splint will be attached to the nose to aid the healing process and support the new nasal structure.

Nose Job Recovery

Following your rhinoplasty, you should arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 48 hours. You may experience bruising and swelling following your rhinoplasty. This will gradually subside over the next 1-2 weeks.
Dr. Gabbay will prescribe pain medication to manage any discomfort. Dr. Gabbay will provide you with a complete list of instructions. Following these will help you achieve optimal results and minimize recovery time. They include:
  • Attending follow-up appointments
  • Keeping your head elevated
  • Applying cold compresses for swelling
  • Giving yourself rest
  • Avoiding strain for at least a week
While you will notice improvements in your nose appearance after 1-2 weeks, results continue to improve with time. The final results of the rhinoplasty may not be visible for 3-6 months when the swelling completely subsides. However, you will see continual improvements as you heal.
