During the course of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, a woman’s body undergoes many natural changes.  Most commonly, these changes occur in the breasts, the abdomen and in the distribution of fat.  The breasts undergo a series of changes, which can cause the post-pregnancy breasts to appear deflated, with significant sagging and a reduction in size.  In addition to breast changes, pregnancy also stretches the abdominal skin and musculature, allowing redundant skin and fat deposits to settle in the abdomem, back and hips.  The appearance of the abdominal and thigh skin may change during pregnancy as well, leading to abnormal pigmentation, stretch marks and cellulite.  Many women find that they struggle to lose the weight gained during pregnancy, despite their dedication to exercise and weight loss programs.  The “Mommy Makeover” concept was created for women experiencing frustration with any of the above post-pregnancy aesthetic changes, and who wish to regain their pre-pregnancy physique in a safe and efficient manner*.

A Mommy Makeover is a good option* for women who:

  • Are in good physical health
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Do not smoke
  • Have found that diet and exercise have not yielded effective weight post-pregnancy weight loss results
  • Want to eliminate stretch marks and cellulite
  • Have sagging, deflated breasts

One of the unique benefits of a Mommy Makeover surgery is that it is completely customizable, and can literally be tailored to meet the exact needs of each patient*. Dr. Gabbay will assess your current state of health; listen carefully to your surgical goals, and utilize his extensive surgical experience to help you determine which combination of procedures should be included in your Mommy Makeover.

If you are planning to lose a dramatic amount of weight or you want to become pregnant again, you should postpone your Mommy Makeover, as both conditions would have an adverse effect on your surgical results.

Evaluation

If you are considering a Mommy Makeover, the first step is to call Gabbay Plastic Surgery and schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Gabbay.  In order to ensure the best possible results*, Dr. Gabbay will talk to you about your procedural expectations, as well as how a Mommy Makeover surgery will impact your health, lifestyle and overall well-being.

During your consultation, some of the issues discussed will include:

  • Your medical history, including past conditions or surgeries
  • An accurate account of any medications or supplements you are currently taking
  • Your use of tobacco or other drugs
  • Your motivations for having a Mommy Makeover
  • Your overall aesthetic goals

Dr. Gabbay will then conduct a medical analysis of your arms, breasts, abdomen, hips and thighs, in order to assess which procedures would be appropriate for you. If it is determined that you are a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover, Dr. Gabbay will recommend a customized course of treatment and photograph you for before and after comparisons.  He will go over the surgical options involved with your Mommy Makeover (including surgical details and the use of anesthesia), disclose any risks or complications, and explain the pre- and post-operative guidelines for recovery*.

Option Details

Although there are many surgical options available, most Mommy Makeover surgeries involve a combination of the following procedures:

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

During pregnancy, skin and muscle tissues in the abdominal area stretch, leaving loose and flabby folds in the stomach region.  Weight loss after childbirth often does not resolve the aesthetic problem of excess abdominal skin and stretched abdominal muscles; however, a tummy tuck surgery can address this exact issue*. Tummy tuck surgery flattens the abdomen by removing redundant fat and skin from the abdominal region, and tightens the inner walls of the weakened abdominal muscles, resulting in a revitalized, firm, flat stomach*. Breast Augmentation

Following pregnancy and breastfeeding, a woman’s breasts may appear smaller and deflated. For women seeking to enhance the size or fullness of their post-pregnancy breasts, Dr. Gabbay can perform a breast augmentation surgery, using a saline or silicone implant*.  Gabbay Plastic Surgery offers a full range of breast implants, which can be customized via their size, shape, composition, texture, and placement.  After assessing your unique aesthetic preferences and surgical goals, Dr. Gabbay will help you to select the ideal implant option for your breast augmentation procedure. Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breast lift surgery can be performed to correct the condition of post-pregnancy breast ptosis (sagging), which occurs when breasts lose their elasticity*. A breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola, which sometimes becomes stretched during pregnancy*. Breast lifts do not increase the size of the breasts (although they can be performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation if a size increase is desired). A breast lift is designed to raise and lift the breasts, resulting in a more youthful and “perky” appearance*. For more information about Breast Lift (Mastopexy), click here.

Breast Reduction

A breast reduction surgery can also be included in your mommy makeover, and is a good option for women who suffer from poor posture, back pain and general discomfort as a result of large breasts*.  A breast reduction will decrease the size of the breasts by removing skin, fat and breast tissue, and will place the breasts in a more lifted and attractive position*.  For more information about Breast Reduction, click here.

Liposuction

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is the process by which excess fat is surgically removed through very small incisions using cannulas (tubes) and an attached suction device to remove the fat.  Liposuction can be effective for the removal of stubborn fat deposits that settle on the abdomen, thighs, arms and back after pregnancy*.  For more information about Liposuction, click here.

Additional plastic surgery options that some women elect to incorporate into their Mommy Makeover include:

  • Buttock Lift (gluteal augmentation): Gluteal augmentation surgery is an excellent option to enhance and augment flat buttocks, and give improved shape to the buttock an hip region*.

  • Thigh Lift: This surgery can correct the issue of loose skin folds around the thighs and buttocks after childbirth, and can smooth and tone the skin, giving it a youthful, pre-pregnancy appearance*.

  • Neck Lift: A neck lift can smooth the neck and define the jawline by tightening neck muscles and removing excess fat*.

  • Arm Lift (Brachioplasty): Arm lift surgery can remove the excess fat and skin under the arms*.

  • Belly Button Surgery: Childbirth and pregnancy can change the navel, causing it to expand, become shallow, or even pop out.  During belly button surgery, Dr. Gabbay can reshape the belly button, or make a new one if necessary*. This is often performed in conjunction with a tummy-tuck.

Postoperative Considerations/Complications

The Mommy Makeover surgery can range in time from either 3-6 hours depending on the overall treatment plan and how many procedures are involved*. The recovery period is dependent on the types of procedures performed. Most patients who receive Mommy Makeovers typically return to their normal daily activities after two to four weeks, although in most cases, patients are advised to wait four weeks to resume strenuous activity (strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and sexual activity)*.  Patients are advised to arrange for household help following the procedure and must enlist a friend or family member to drive you home on the day of the procedure.  In most cases, Mommy Makeover patients will be required to wear a support garment for several weeks after surgery to facilitate healing and optimize their post-surgical figure*.  Bruising and swelling can be common, although this appearance will fade within a few weeks to one month*.

Following your Mommy Makeover, it is important to monitor your healing progress and varying degrees of pain are to be expected.  If you experience any shortness of breath, pains or tightness deep in your chest and/or an irregular heart beat you should call Gabbay Plastic Surgery immediately. And of course, if these symptoms are bad enough call 911. To avoid complications, it is crucial that you strictly follow the guidelines and instructions provided by Dr. Gabbay*.  The immediate results are oftentimes difficult to see through the swelling and discoloration caused by the procedures but typically within 1-2 weeks, you will be able to appreciate the new you*.  While some results will be visible sooner than others, your body will continue to heal and as the swelling subsides, it will continue to reveal a shapely body that can be maintained by living a healthy lifestyle for years to come*.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a procedure for women who have had children and want to restore their pre-pregnancy body*.  The goal of the procedure is to return the breasts, tummy, and waistline to their shape before childbirth and minimize the toll(s) of pregnancy on the body*.  A Mommy Makeover can include many procedures including breast surgery, a tummy tuck, and liposuction.

Why should I consider a Mommy Makeover?

Childbirth is hard on a woman, weakening the stomach muscles, deflating the breasts, creating stubborn fat deposits, causing cellulite, and stretch marks.  A Mommy Makeover will correct whatever problems you have with your body, now that you are finished having children.

Who makes a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

A good candidate for a Mommy Makeover includes:

  • Women who have realistic expectations about their Mommy Makeover outcome
  • Women who are finished having children
  • Women who are suffering from excess skin and fat around the abdomen
  • Women who have breasts that sag, are asymmetrical, or that have deflated from breastfeeding
  • Women who want to re-contour their body to their pre-pregnancy shape

Should I have a Mommy Makeover if I plan to have more children?

A Mommy Makeover procedure is designed for women who are finished having children, as a tummy tuck involves surgical tightening of the abdominal wall, and removal of abdominal skin.  Following a tummy tuck, these structures no longer have the same stretching capacity to accommodate a growing fetus; although breast surgery and liposuction can be performed even if you plan to get pregnant again.

What should I expect during my consultation with Dr. Gabbay?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Gabbay will ask you about your short and long-term goals, regarding your Mommy Makeover.  He will describe what the procedure encompasses, and perform a physical examination as well as evaluating your medical history.  If it is determined that a Mommy Makeover is right for you, he will advise you as to which procedures are the best for your circumstances, and talk about the incision locations and techniques involved.  You will review before and after photographs to give you an approximate idea of the outcome you can expect*. Other topics discussed will include risks, surgical details, pre- and post-operative concerns, and the costs involved.

What are the risks and complications involved with a Mommy Makeover?

As with all surgical procedures, there is the risk of complications and some that may occur with your Mommy Makeover include*:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Incision scarring
  • Contour abnormalities
  • Capsular contraction
  • Deflation of implants
  • Asymmetry
  • Blood clots

How is a Mommy Makeover procedure performed?

Although there are many variations to a Mommy Makeover, typically the procedure usually starts with breast surgery, which may include a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a combination of both.  The breast surgery is followed with a tummy tuck, and in most cases a woman will require a full tummy tuck due to the amount of lax skin and weakened muscles that make up the abdominal wall.  Liposuction is typically used as well to achieve a better contour of the stomach and waist area*.

Where will the Mommy Makeover incisions be located?

There are many incision variations available but in general the breast incisions will be located along a lower portion of the edge of the areola (pigmented nipple) area if only an augmentation is performed.  If you are having a breast lift, a lollipop type incision encircling the edge of the areola (pigmented nipple) area and also a straight line incision from the bottom edge of the nipple, down to the where the breast tissue meets the chest wall is involved.  Part of this vertical incision will be hidden in the fold under the breast.  For a breast reduction, the incision may be a lollipop technique, or with larger reductions, a lollipop incision with the additional curved anchor incision hidden under the breast fold will be used. A tummy tuck incision runs across the lower abdominal area (located within the pubic hairline) and liposuction scars are small and usually located in areas hidden by clothing.

Will my scars look bad after a Mommy Makeover?

Although the incisions from a Mommy Makeover do leave scars, at first they will be reddish in color and they progressively fade to pink, blending in with the natural pigmentation of your skin*.  In most cases, the scars are fine lines, however, if they heal too wide, this can be corrected at a later time*.  The breast lift and reduction scars may be partly concealed under the breast itself, depending on the procedure performed, and a breast augmentation scar is concealed along the pigmented border of the areola*.  The scar from a tummy tuck is long (from hip bone to hip bone), however, it is low on the abdomen (falling within the pubic hairline) and can be concealed underneath underwear and a swimsuit.  Liposuction scars are very small and they typically become invisible with time*.

Will I have to do anything special to prepare for my Mommy Makeover?

Most of your pre-surgery preparation will involve planning the help you will need for your recovery.  You will also be required to do lab tests, and it is advised that you have any prescriptions filled before your surgery.  You will be provided with specific instructions; and reading and understanding the guidelines will aid in your overall experience, as well as your recovery process.

How long will my recovery take?

Due to the tummy tuck, and the fact that you had multiple procedures performed in one operation, the recovery period from a Mommy Makeover is significant, and can be fairly uncomfortable the first few days. Pain medication will effectively control your discomfort so that you can move about and sleep as needed, and you should be up and walking (slowly) the day after surgery to prevent blood clots*.  By the end of the first week, you should be moving more comfortably, although, you will not be able to drive a car for two weeks*.  All of the sutures and drains will be removed within 1-2 two weeks and most people return to work after 2-3 weeks with light activity and duties*.  Full recovery from a Mommy Makeover procedure, for most patients, is approximately six weeks depending on individual healing capabilities*.

Can a Mommy Makeover help me emotionally?

While there are many physical advantages that occur after a Mommy Makeover, one of the biggest benefits is the fact that it increases self-image and confidence*.  For many women, the Mommy Makeover allows a woman to look as good on the outside, as she feels on the inside*.
